Every year except 2011Japan hosts an international convention and exhibit on precision metal stamping. The reason it was not held this year was because of the earthquake and tsunami last March. This precision metal stamping event is known as the Japan Metal Stamping Technology Exhibition. Here new methods and processes are introduced.

While metal stamping is an industry that dates back to the Iron Age, it’s a far cry from forming crude tools back then. Now the concentration is on precision and accuracy. Each stage of a metal press process has to be perfect. There is no room for error because for most cases, life is at stake. Thus, whether the finished product has to be pressed, stamped, blanked, embossed, rolled or bent, metal press companies have to maintain a clear vision of their goal for perfection.
It starts with an idea. For example, you want to have a new kind of tape dispenser made of metal. There are several components to that dispenser from the base, body, roller, mechanism, and the final cutting jagged edge. Each component cannot have the same metal thickness. For example the mechanism to allow the tape to rotate should be made of thinner metal than the metal used for the body. Each part of the dispenser should have a mold for mass production. Some metal press companies use software to assist in planning the mold and design. Some of the popular software are Pro Engineer, Solid Works, AutoCAD, and Unigraphics.
From the software, the plan goes to drafters and artists who execute the design and made them workable in the real world with the existing machines. These artists and engineers also use software like Anysis. A test product is done and it has to pass through the FMEA standards. Ideally though, metal press companies use the FMEA standards from the start. This reduces the risk of failure.
Once it passes through the FMEA standards, a trial run is done before the mass production of the tape dispensers.

Due to the high competition amongst car makers in Japan, manufactures have been forced to invest in sheet metal stamping for various car parts.  Stamping will soon wipe out the manual way of panel beating and manufacture of spare parts.  This is a new technology that not only makes car parts, but also makes various stronger and durable parts that are cut out from a single metal or sheet.  Sheet metal stamping comes with a low unit cost amongst its other advantages to the manufacturer.  Stamping has also enabled car part dealers to manufacturer many types of spare parts, which took longer to make and came with a high cost.

Japanese car part dealers have wholly incorporated the new technology due to its effectiveness in production.  Car parts dealers have preferred the stamping method because of its high quality parts and correct fitting.  Spare parts made from metal stamping are made to measure and does not need to be returned to the factory for further panel beating.  The size and fitting of spare parts made from stamping are uniform, and fits in the same models of cars the world over.  It also saves on the number of human resource availability.  With stamping, the number of staff decreases considerably since most of the work is not done manually.

Die processing is uniform in stamping, and has to be tested before the parts leave the factory.  Incase of color variation, it is changed instantly. Japanese spare parts are sold all around the world.  They sell both new and old spare parts for various types of cars.  Buyers can order such parts directly from the factory or through available car dealers either online or by phone.  It is now possible to buy any spare by a code.  At the naming of a code, dealers know which type of spare part is required.  Technology has made the world one global village.  It is now easy to do business literally anywhere in the world with ease.  Factories are now able to manufacture a number of spare-parts from a single sheet, which meets the required needs and are durable.
